Hot Docs and DOC BC | YT | NWT are pleased to offer two complimentary Doc Ignite workshops to BC, Yukon and Northwest Territories based filmmakers on February 15 & 22, 2021.
Pre-registration is required.
Offering direct market intelligence and skills training, Doc Ignite workshops provide filmmakers with access to a wide range of professional development curriculum. Doc Ignite labs aim to provide new opportunities to filmmakers across all regions of Canada and continue to help them launch sustainable documentary careers.
Doc Ignite is supported by Netflix. These sessions are presented with the support of Creative BC.
Strategies for Building a Sustainable Career

Documentary filmmaking is a métier; a career that one should in fact sustain a livelihood from. Evolving industry changes have made that more difficult. Core skill building, diversifying talents and strategic planning are at the heart of this workshop. Participating filmmakers do skills assessments, identify areas of growth and self prescribe action plans to move their professional goals forward.

Writing for Documentary Funds

Meet the panelists:

Melaw Nakehk’o is a Dene/Dënesųłiné artist, community leader, actor, and director based in Yellowknife, NT. Her exemplary work in reviving and teaching moosehide tanning has initiated a resurgence of the practice and helped shape a broader movement across Canada. Her short doc K’i Tah Amongst the Birch part of ALFF 2021’s Official Selection.

Carol Geddes is an Inland Tlingit director and writer, known for Picturing a People: George Johnston, Tlingit Photographer (1997), Anash and the Legacy of the Sun-Rock (2007) and Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief (1986).

Krista Davis is a visual artist and filmmaker whose projects engage with the complexities of human and non-human coexistence in our age of ecological crisis. Her short doc The Salt River Water Walk is part of ALFF 2021’s Official Selection.

Naomi Mark is a Yukon-based Director / Producer who works in both fiction and documentary. Her work can be seen on both CBC and Knowledge Network.

Pablo Saravanja is a Director and co-founder of aRTLeSS Collective, Northwest Territories’ premiere production studio, and co-founder of the Dead North Film Festival.

Prepare to pitch for development funds and a development deal for your project. Sell your project to prestigious festival markets like Hot Docs International Documentary Festival and beyond!

Six emerging and high-potential producers will be selected for this rigorous and intimate market-preparation course where they’ll develop a successful festival strategy and hone their project pitches and materials to prepare for festivals and markets like the Deal Maker program at Hot Docs.

The Breakthrough Program was created with a mandate to provide more access and inclusion for individuals self-identifying as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, and/or LGBTQ+ and to increase participation for emerging film creators from underrepresented communities. We encourage applicants to self-identify in their application.

Selected Filmmakers Will Get Exclusive Access

For two months leading up to Hot Docs, weekly sessions with acclaimed documentary filmmakers and project-specific feedback from funders, broadcasters, distributors, and peers. As well as workshops, where participants will hone their trailers and work on their pitch materials with story editors, producers, and pitch specialists.

2. In one page, tell us why you would benefit from the Breakthrough Program and what you hope to achieve by attending a pitch session such as the Hot Docs Festival and Forum, or equivalent. Why would this program be timely for your career as a producer or director intending to produce your next project? Tell us about how you intend to interact with the other participants in the program to build community and how you have built a community in your career thus far.

3. In one page, tell us briefly about the main project you are intending to workshop during this program. Please include sizzle, trailer, visual elements/references and/or websites you have.

4. In one page, if you have a second or third project in development, you may tell us about them. We encourage you to include links to any trailers, visual elements/references and/or websites you have. However, this is not mandatory.

2. Be documentary filmmakers who have at least one producing or directing credit; or who have a comparable level of industry success and experience in the arts.

4. Be able to attend the following: the Breakthrough Program (March – April); the majority of the online edition of the Hot Docs Festival including the Forum (or one equivalent festival of choice to be discussed with the facilitator); and all training during the program.

DOC BC in Partnership with DOXA Documentary Film Festival Present: Cinematography Masterclass with Iris Ng 


Iris Ng is one of Canada’s most prolific documentary cinematographers. Her camera and gaze have sensitively captured the stories in multi-award winning films such as Stories We Tell (2012), Toxic Beauty (2019), Shirkers (2018), Nuuca (2018), Migrant Dreams (2016), and many more, including the popular Netflix docu-series Making a Murderer. This moderated conversation will take a deep dive into the unique creative process of a documentary cinematographer, drawing excerpts from her own work and notes from the field. A must-attend event for directors, cinematographers and all creatives interested in the power of visual storytelling.

About Iris Ng

Iris Ng is recognized as a versatile cinematographer, who lends her patience, creativity, intuition, and skill to bring a director’s vision to the screen. For over a decade, Iris has collaborated with award-winning directors Sarah Polley, Min Sook Lee, Fredrik Gertten, Vikram Jayanti, Michelle Latimer, and Martha Burns on a variety of documentaries while shooting a wide variety of films for artists such as Chris Curreri, Oliver Husain, Bambitchell, and Richard Fung.

Iris was intrigued at an early age by the photos and Super 8 movies that were created and preserved by the image-makers in her family. That discovery – that it is possible to capture the essence of a moment – has become a lifelong influence in her creative work.

After obtaining her BFA in Film Production from York University, she has honed her craft shooting over sixty projects in many facets of the industry, from narrative, art and documentary films to commercials, music videos and episodic television. In the process, she has had the opportunity to work in Asia, Africa, Europe, and across North America.

Iris brings a visual arts background to the projects she works on – which allows her to approach the work abstractly and conceptually, before tapping into the technical skills required to bring a director’s vision to screen. Iris is known for her intuition and patience balanced by strong technique.

She is equally comfortable working in the latest digital formats as well as 35mm, 16mm and Super 8 film, according to the needs of the story or concept. While her work has been screened in festivals and installations around the world, Iris’ goal continues to be to capture the essence of the moment in the medium, regardless of the size of the project.

Tamara Dawit – Finding Sally

Tamara Dawit is a producer/director based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She has produced television content for CBC, Bravo, MTV, Radio Canada, Discovery, NHK, among other networks. She has also overseen the production of digital projects and impact campaigns for Plan International, MTV Canada, Girl Effect, and other clients. Tamara has participated in labs at Cannes, TIFF, IDFA, Hot Docs, and Sheffield. She is an alumnus of both the Berlin and Durban Talents programs and a member of Film Fatales and the Brown Girls Documentary Mafia. In 2019 she took part in the Cannes Doc Corner Rough Cut program, the Miradas Doc Lab Afrolatam pitch, the Doha Film Institute Producers Lab, Produce Au Sud, and the Apost Lab. In 2020 her new film Finding Sally was released. As well this year Tamara is taking part in Good Pitch Kenya, Torino’s Extended Lab, and the EAVE Producers Lab.

Lulu Wei – There’s No Place Like This Place, Anyplace 

Lulu is a Toronto based director and cinematographer whose work explores issues around urbanization, cultural identity and queerness. She has been working on There’s No Place Like This Place, Anyplace, her first feature film, for the past four years. In that time, Lulu and the film have been a part of the RIDM Talent Lab, the Reelworld E20 program, Hot Docs Doc Accelerator and the DOC Breakthrough program.

Greg Crompton – Eddy’s Kingdom 

Greg got his start creating mini-documentaries in Europe and Africa. He then went on to produce a series of TV shows called VJIAM.tvGo For Gold, and Project Green Generation. His forays into directing have won awards for Guns to Mics (feature documentary) and Listening to a Sense of Place (short documentary). His most recent gig was directing the documentary show BC Was Awesome season 3, released in fall 2019. Eddy’s Kingdom is Greg’s first feature documentary as a solo director.

Tony Massil – The End From Here 

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Tony is a documentary filmmaker and editor whose work has screened at festivals such as TIFF, SXSW, True/False, VIFF and Hot Docs. A graduate of the Simon Fraser University Film Program, he was also a participant in Talent Labs at TIFF and RIDM. His work focuses on themes of family, history, and how people’s interior lives are reflected in the landscapes they inhabit.

D’Arcy Hamilton (Moderator)

Priding himself in not only making the best shots possible, D’Arcy thrives on telling engaging stories of real people. With experience traveling to over 28 countries, D’Arcy has built a reputation to be a very well rounded filmmaker. With experience in stop motion time lapses, steadicam, and After Effects animation, D’Arcy is always thriving to push the limits of technology, to tell fascinating, engaging and heartfelt stories.

D’Arcy has worked closely with Hello Cool World with many clients, such as First Nations Technology Council, VACPC, Arts Health BC, Towards the Heart (BCCDC), together with Agentic on “Room in Your Heart” a Foster Care campaign, and the First Nations Health Authority. He is part of their workshop team for “Drawing Wisdom”, (headed up by Jada-Gabrielle Pape, Saanich & Snuneymuxw Nations) which includes mentoring workshops with First Nations communities using video story telling techniques to explore health related and cultural topics.

He has also worked directly with many community-based foundations/groups producing and directing short films to tell their stories. Some include First United Church, Praxis Spinal Cord Institute and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society.

D’Arcy has also DOP’d several projects with Love Intersections for Telus Storyhive as well as a short about an Iranian-Canadian who fights for women’s rights through her music for CBC Arts.


Ann Marie Fleming (Panelist)

Ann Marie Fleming is an award-winning Canadian visual artist, writer, director, animator and cross-platform media maker who works in a variety of genres (animation, experimental, documentary and drama). Her work often deals with themes of family, history and memory.

Ann Marie’s graduating film from Emily Carr College of Art and Design,You Take Care Now (1989), was ranked among the Top 10 short films in Canada’s 150th Essential Cinema.  Blue Skies (2002) and New Shoes: an interview in exactly 5 minutes (1990) both won Best Canadian Short Film Awards at TIFF. Her filmography includes such acclaimed short films as I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors (2010), Big Trees (2013), and the animated web-series My Place (2009) for Discovery USA’s Ann Marie adapted her 2003 award-winning animated documentary The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam into a graphic novel, which was nominated for two Eisner Awards in 2007 at San Diego’s Comic-Con International as well as being listed on the American Library Association’s Top Ten List for Tens.  The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam also won the Doug Wright Award for Best Canadian Comic.

Ann Marie’s 2016 animated feature Window Horses, about a young Canadian poet discovering her family history, received awards all over the world, including the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Animated feature, Best Animated Film at the Gijon International Film Festival in Barcelona, the Jury Prize at the Bucheon International Animation Festival in Korea, the audience award at the AnimaSyros International Animation Festival in Greece, Best Canadian and Best B.C. Feature Film at the Vancouver International Film Festival, Best Canadian Screenplay by the Vancouver Critic’s Award, Best Canadian Film by the Association of Canadian Online Critics, and the Humanitarian Award from the Riverrun Festival in North Carolina.

In 2018 Ann Marie created the portrait A Short Film about Tegan and Sara, for the Governor General Awards, highlighting their advocacy work in the LGBTQ community, and is currently working on Question Period, a short film that gives a window to the thoughts and voices of a group of recent Syrian refugee women as they negotiate their life in Canada

Jenn Storm (Panelist)

I’m a director, editor and animator and I live in Vancouver, Canada. I’ve been making films for 23 years.

Documentary is my favourite storytelling medium: it expands our understanding, fuels change, captures complexity, and provides endless possibilities to play with the art of film language.

Recent projects and collaborations include: Stuffed (editor, story editor) a feature-length documentary about taxidermy artists which premiered at SXSW 2019 in the doc competition, Amplify Her Motion Comic (animator) a multi-platform project exploring the life stories of female DJs, Journeys to Adäka (co-editor, story consultant) a feature-length documentary about the healing and reclaiming journeys of First Nations artists in the Yukon, which won the Audience Choice award for Best Canadian Documentary at The Available Light Film Festival 2018, and The Road Forward (editor, visual effects supervisor) a feature-length musical documentary about First Nations activism which won 6 awards at the 2018 Leo Awards, including Best Picture and Best Picture Editor in the Feature Documentary category.

I chose the path of artist very early in life, and as a director I often explore creativity, culture and point of view, using animation, experimental storytelling and sound design to evoke a character’s inner world. Examples include a short about Nick Bantock, which was part of the Gemini-nominated arts series 12 TakesCity Centre, which explores condo development through the eyes of poet Evelyn Lau, and Assembly, a hand-painted animation about feminist filmmaking which was given the 2012 Artistic Achievement Award by Women in Film Vancouver.

As an animator I’ve always been inspired by the artistic legacy of animators at the National Film Board of Canada, and love getting the opportunity to work with mixed media, stop motion and digital techniques. For 10 years I’ve also worked part-time as a promo producer/editor at Knowledge Network, BC’s arts and culture network, making trailers for documentaries and children’s television.

As a documentary editor, I enjoy crafting dramatic arcs and out of the material of real life. When working as a story editor, I love helping a filmmaker find pathways through their characters’ journeys – drawing out connections, themes and contrasts. Both these processes are often puzzles to untangle, diving into the heart of the content, sorting through what exists, what is most alive and what needs to be understood.

I first became involved in the film community in 1996 through the Gulf Islands Film and Television School on Galiano Island, and the ethos of DIY-powered, experimental and passion-driven media making that was the staple of that community still fuels me as an artist. I’m also trained as a somatic therapeutic counsellor, and am drawn to film as a tool for education and healing.

Film making is a privilege I try to use with awareness and responsibility. Collaborative relationships are really important me, and I am deeply grateful to get to work with the talented individuals you see credited on these project pages.

Charlie Tyrell (Panelist)

Charlie Tyrell is a Torontonian filmmaker and the New Year’s Baby of 1988. His work has screened internationally at such festivals as Sundance, SXSW, Hot Docs, Tribeca, Nashville Film Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival, Raindance, Brooklyn Film Festival and many more. His latest short doc, My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes premiered at Sundance 2018 and went on to win best Documentary Short at Cinema Eye Honors, the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Short at SXSW 2018, TIFF Canada’s Top Ten 2019 and was shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2019.

Charlie’s work often combines live action footage with stop motion and 2D animation. He also likes skateboarding and swore he would never eat another hot dog until the Blue Jays win the World Series.

Hello DOC community,

Unfortunately, the Zoom technology failed us today and many were not able to access the DOC BC BRUNCH.

We have re-started, re-initiated, copy-pasted every RSVP and it simply won’t budge. Our team has been doing the best to get it going but unfortunately, it is beyond our tech skills currently.

I apologize sincerely as this was going to be our most attended webinar. And we did everything the same way as it was done before. The moderators and panelists have chosen to begin the conversation and record it on Zoom as (for reasons beyond us) it only allowed panelists into the Zoom. We have done everything on our power today and in the last few weeks including upgrading to better versions of Zoom Webinar and training, but this is completely unexpected.

The recording will be made available to everyone, and we will have internal discussions about what happened, how to avoid it, and if this session can be organized once more in the future for the membership.

As you know we are doing this bi-weekly and with the work of volunteers.
