The 2011 DOXA Documentary Film Festival Media Launch
Thursday, April 7th, 2011
1:00 pm
The Media Club, 695 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC

The 2011 DOXA Documentary Film Festival, May 6 – 15, explodes this year with an amazing collection of films
from Canada and around the globe.

DOXA is thrilled to kick off the festival with an all-ages show at Vancouver’s legendary Vogue Theatre following the premiere of Louder than a Bomb! The film follows four teams of Chicago-area high school students as they prepare and perform at the world’s largest youth poetry slam. To mark the City of Vancouver’s 125th year, DOXA is proud to present some of the very best of Vancouver’s filmmakers both past and present in our Spotlight on Vancouver program, including a tribute to the late great documentary filmmaker, Allan King.

The idea that film needs discussion is the impetus behind DOXA’s Justice Forum. Now in its second year, the Justice Forum has developed and expanded to cover a broad range of topics, everything from international drug policy (Raw Opium: Pain Pleasure and Profit) to the rise and fall of social housing (The Pruitt-Igoe Myth: An Urban History). DOXA is also very excited to offer two exceptional pieces of writing this year from guest essayists Robin Morgan and Governor General award winner John Vaillant.

From music docs (Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune), to a special screening of Amnesty! When They Are All Free, to DOXA’s first ever 3D presentation with the legendary Werner Herzog’s stunning film Cave of Forgotten Dreams, this collection of films runs the gamut from tragedy to triumph. Join us as we reveal the entire DOXA lineup! Joining us for the Media Launch will be local filmmakers and DOXA staff and board to answer questions regarding specific films and filmmakers.
